Green Jobs

Green Jobs are those involved in producing goods or services that help to protect the environment and look after our natural resources

'The Government's commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 will mean investment, and change, across the economy: from the decarbonisation of buildings and transport, to shifts in diet, aviation and industry.' Net Zero Jobs, Resolution Foundation.

'There could be as many as 694,000 direct jobs employed in the low-carbon and renewable energy economy by 2030 in England, rising to over 1.18 million by 2050'. Local Green Jobs report, Local Governments Association.  For example the target to install 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028,  will require an increase in trained heat pump engineers from 3000 to 27,000 by 2028.

The Green Jobs Taskforce Report published in 2021 sets out a 10 point plan for the Green Industrial Revolution and alongside this the Skills for Jobs White Paper involves rolling out a suite of funded qualifications up to level 3 to ensure people get the right skills to move into a green job.  As well as new jobs and apprenticeships being created, existing jobs will need to be carried out in a greener way meaning that every single individual will need to develop green skills no matter what level the job is.

Each region within the UK sets out it's own improvement plan for economic growth including promoting green jobs through Local Enterprise Partnerships. You can find out more about opportunities in your area in local training opportunities.
