Get Referencing!

Choosing your reference guide

Where do you get your information?

A common problem is students' reliance on inappropriate sources for instruction on how to reference. Most students acknowledge that they know they are probably not referencing properly, but instead of consulting their tutor, the required reference text in the course, or the course handouts, they turned to unsuitable sources for help: friends, parents, or old handouts from high school. In these cases, the advice they got or remembered was often misleading.

All higher education assignments and courses will always be accompanied by clear instructions on how to reference your assignments. You must read this carefully and then actually do what it says in the guide. Your tutor is there to help you if you don’t understand or have a question. There are many fairly reliable sources for how to reference on the internet, however, the best starting point is the guidance provided by your tutor and your higher education establishment. That way you can be sure you get it right. To find out about referencing click on: Understanding the rules.
