Applying

Top Tips

  • Universities and colleges are keen to help potential mature students, so make contact with those that interest you – they all have people who provide information and advice and who are experienced at supporting applicants.
  • Research courses thoroughly to make sure that you can meet the entry requirements. If you have relevant experience, consider applying for the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).
  • Try to go to open days before your application if you can.
  • To support your application, choose a reliable referee who knows you well.
  • When completing your personal statement, try to use examples to show how you have developed the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary for higher education study and the course itself. Make the most of your work and life experience.
  • Make sure you are aware of course application dates and apply in plenty of time. This way you won’t be tempted to rush your application or miss the deadline.
  • Make sure you disclose any information about any physical disabilities, learning differences or mental health issues so that you can be considered for any additional support you may be entitled to.
  • Complete your application as carefully as possible. It’s difficult to spot your own mistakes, so get a trusted person (e.g. a tutor, manager or family member) to check it through for you.
