Preparing to study checklist

  • Study a short course first to help you prepare for your course of choice e.g. IT skills, Essay Writing & Access courses. Many students find this very helpful, especially if they have not studied for some time.
  • Find out as much as possible about your chosen course –
  • Obtain the college/university prospectus/course information sheets
  • Visit the college/university
  • Talk to the course tutor/adviser
  • Check out any specific courses you need to undertake for your choice of course/career e.g. some careers may specify you need English or Maths.
  • Think about how you are going to manage your time whilst studying e.g. How will study fit around your job, your family?
  • Discuss your plans with your family, friends, employer
  • Find out what financial support is available to you
