Overview
Gaining a qualification can be a great way to help you progress in your career. Getting a qualification can also give you the confidence, knowledge and skills you need to progress.
In some jobs you can't even move up the ladder unless you have particular qualifications.
Before you choose a course you need to:
- Be clear about the skills and expertise you already have and how you would like to progress within your existing job role or in your career area.
- Explore the type of qualifications that will give you the skills and knowledge you need to progress further
- Be sure that the qualification you are interested in will be valued by your employer or another employer, and will get you where you want to go
- Explore the training and development opportunities offered to employees by your current employer
- If you are in a union find out whether there are opportunities for training through Unionlearn.

If your employer has a training or Human Resources (HR) department check out what training or support might be available to you. If you have an appraisal scheme then you can ask about your opportunities for career progression during your appraisal interview.

Find out employment trends in you region to ensure there are likely to be job opportunities in the future.
There are work-related courses available which will help you combine work and study and enable you to use your place of work to provide the evidence of your learning and undertake project work.
Search to see what courses are available at local colleges and universities. There are short course and part time options available so that you can study and work at the same time. Some employers will give you time off for study if the course is relevant to your work role.
