Overview to funding changes from September 2012

Changes to funding for student fees take affect Setember 2012

The key elements of the changes are:

  • Any university or college will be able to charge fees between £6,000 and in exceptional cases £9,000 a year - subject to meeting conditions on widening participation and fair access. You will need to look at individual institution websites to see what they plan to charge for courses starting after September 2012.
  • In addition to tuition fee loans and living cost loans (also called maintenance loans), there will be other financial support available to help full-time students with the cost of university.

Who will be affected by the changes?

The new fee system will only affect new entrants in 2012. Any major changes to higher education fees will not affect those who are already at University when they are introduced or those who commence their studies in September 2011. For these students the fee rate will only rise with inflation as in the current system. However, if you are making changes to your course - do consult your institution to see if this might affect your funding.

Eligible part-time students who start their degree from September 2012 will have access to loans for tuition costs and will not have to pay up front, as long as it’s their first degree and they are studying for at least 25% of the equivalent full-time course.
