Top tips
- Decide what it is you want to get from studying - this may be immediately or in the long term;
- Explore the flexible ways to study and decide which is best for you
- Find out the costs of study and available financial support, including for childcare
- Weigh up the benefits against the costs but take a long-term view!
- Find out what job opportunities might be open to you if you complete your study.
- Consider doing a short course at your local college to brush up on a skill area e.g. maths, IT. Find a university/college
- Be clear and positive about your current experience, skills and qualifications
- Look at courses and entry requirements
- Find out as much as you can about the courses and institutions you are interested in.
- Ask your employer if there is support available for tuition fees and/or study leave. Further study might be something you want to raise at an appraisal or review meeting.
- Discuss your plans with family and friends
- Get advice and support to help you decide
- Stick to your guns – it may seem like a challenge, but universities and colleges are keen to recruit people like you.
